I am going to my first real black-tie affair this evening. It's being held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art -- in the room that houses the Temple of Dendur. I am pretty excited to go, but at the same time having a minor panic attack over what to wear to the event--so much so that I schlepped 3 outfits in a very crowded garment bag into work this morning. 1. Long (not floor length, stops right above the ankle), black velvet dress that has a high neckline and spaghetti straps - similar to a halter style on top - to be worn with a cropped sequined capelet on top, and held closed with a (fake) diamond-like art nouveau style pin.
My fear is that the fakeness of everything will be apparent. BF seemed to like this outfit, but it seems a bit prom-ish to me.
2. Black velvet H&M jacket to be worn with the above-mentioned pin on the lapel, with a black cap-sleeved top with satin trim beneath, and peacock blue multilayered satin skirt that hits about 2 inches below the knee.
While this is the most modern/sophisticated of the three ensembles, my fear is that it is not formal enough.
3. Black chiffon dress with some sequins in a geometric pattern (a bargain from Filene's basement at only $39.99) that hits mid-calf (unfortunate).
This one is not that flattering and seems more "cocktail" than black-tie, plus, I forgot my shawl so I will probably freeze to death. However, it is a "black dress" and I doubt that anyone would fault me for showing up in it.

AY! I recently had a blacktie event dressed inappropriately. (Being a student is great excuse, one you do not have.) Although I feel it is a little early for the velvet dress that is the one I would use. Nix the caplet. Its a little too Mischa Barton. Maybe a silk shawl? Keep the pin.
It's not so much the outfit, but rather the attitude. You'll be fine with any of the options! (Side note: If it were me, I'd go with the velvet dress, because, have you seen ME in a velvet dress? I look pretty darn good, if I do say so myself!)
Oh my goodness! I normally always bank on the Filene's basement bargains, but it sounds like you really won't be comfortable in that...so, I'm going to go with option one also: velvet dress. I didn't have a problem with the capelet (in fact, loved the link!!) until ET#1 mentioned Mischa Barton, who I hold in unfavorable light.
#1 Out. Trying too hard to look good for this event with floor-length garb. You are too busy a woman for that.
#3 Out. Anything that makes you freeze is out (despite the remedy of cocktails)
#2 - Sophisticated = good. Maybe you can even swing a couple phone numbers from some regular Metropolitan Museum going intellectuals to make BF jealous. (Sorry BF, but a woman always needs to verify her marketability).
My vote is for #2.
