I am fairly certain that I am going to do with most the bathroom -- subway tiles on the walls almost up to the ceiling, and marble hex tiles with a dark gray marble border for the floor. A console sink (because the space is too narrow for anything else, and I am not a fan of the pedestal sink), sticking with but reglazing my existing tub (I would love to get rid of it and put in one of those fancy showers, but I have to be practical and think about resale), and a light shade of blue (almost aqua) for the ceiling to break up all that white. The picture on the left gives you the general idea. I think ET#1 will be happy to know that I am scheduled to have all of this work done in April. I should have a spiffy new bathroom by May!
I am still trying to figure out what shelves and shower containers I'm going to use. I have a propensity to collect an insane amount of toiletries -- shampoo, conditioner, leave in conditioner, face scrub, body scrubs and all variations of moisturizers and bath gels. It's a disease and I have to stop. In my head, my new bathroom will be a sparkling oasis. However, realizing this dream will involve me hiring a cleaning lady and squeezing as much storage space into said bathroom as possible.
As ET#1 likes to point out, my toilet is not so cooperative. And I am pretty sure that I am wasting hundreds of gallons of water a week because of the constant drip of my faucet and my tempermental toilet where the water runs constantly. On to the most imporant part of my bathroom redo. I am torn between two toilets:
(i) a Toto toilet (because I fell in love with this brand of toilets while traveling in Japan and they are supposed to be the best -- yes, it is possible to fall in love with a toilet) with "Double Cyclone flushing technology"
or
(ii) an American Standard Champion toilet (because of their slogan "declaring a plunger free world" and the video on their website where they flush 15 golfballs without any problems).
If "capacity" wasn't an issue, then I would probably get the Kohler Archer toilet because I think it is pretty. But, for once, I will go for function over form and go with either the Toto or the Champion, both of which claim to have the "largest trapways available on the market". In the battle of the toilets, which do you prefer -- Japan or USA?

Hmm. Just based on looks, my choice would go #1, then #3, then #2. #2 came in last because I don't like the curved tank shape with the handle on the front/side. Since it isn't good to judge based on looks alone, I'd probably still go with #1 first because I have heard that it's pretty fancy. I didn't look at the price differences, but I imagine the toto would be at the higher end of the price bracket. If so, I'd weigh that against how long you'll be in this place. It would be sad to splurge on the toilet of your dreams (wow, that sounds funny) if you end up moving in a few years and can't bring it with you.
I vote Toto..it'll increase the resale of your unit ;)
Hey! I assume you check out apartmenttherapy, right? they had a recent feature on fridges AND toilets: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/bathroom/best-small-toilets-2008-toto-duravit-kohler-044502
So, your choices look kind of similar to me...a feature I would look for is if it can flush a mouse. Which, if it can flush a golf ball a mouse would be cake. Is it wrong to vote American and hope you help "stimulate the economy" and help those of us with low interest accruing savings accounts get back on track so we can purchase our own homes in the coming months? Congrats on all the renos! sounds fun :)
i have that american standard toilet and can attest that it's an excellent and most dependable toilet! the functionality definitely gets five stars from me!
also note that you dont necessarily need to get that exact style if you dont like the look, right? because the "champion flushing system" comes in several different styles of toilets.
isnt there also a huge cost difference between the american standard and the toto? i was pleasantly shocked by how inexpensive the american standard toilet was. it was something like $200? the totos are mad expensive.
a last thing to consider is coordination of the porcelains in your bathroom. what brand is your console sink? if it's also american standard, then it would be good to go with the same brand of toilet because the the colors will match. (for example, american standards and kohlers dont match well because the first is a warmer white while the latter is a cooler white.)
you're going to reglaze your bathtub, so you have little control over the color of the white. but at least your sink and toilet could match. otherwise, having 3 different shades of white might look a little crazy. (i reglazed my bathtub too. highly recommend it! it's inexpensive and definitely a good value.)
My console sink is the Duravit Happy-D. That's good to know about matching the "whites" on all the different items in the bathroom. I'll see if I can get a sample of the Rittenhouse Square wall tile to bring along to match the toilet and the sink... Oh, and I LOVE apartmenttherapy! I check it about 10 times a day... The funny thing about the "American Standard" toilet is that it is made in Mexico and the "Toto" is made in the USA! Weird how that works out.
"Oh, and I LOVE apartmenttherapy! I check it about 10 times a day..."
i'm sure your clients really appreciate that! HAH.
I check AT less than once an hour. I don't think that's sooooo bad. Besides, it is *somewhat* related to what I do for a living. Real estate, apartments, property, etc...
I would test how you feel when you are sitting on them since that is what you are going to be using it for
